There are many different forms of personality disorders, such as antisocial personality disorder and borderline personality disorder. Depending on the specific diagnosis you receive, there are multiple different appropriate therapy options to discover and work through. But are there other self-care and coping strategies you can learn to do on your own in addition to seeking therapy? Of course! Here are a few coping strategies you may find helpful.

Get Active

Physical activity can help some people to manage their symptoms. A lot of people find that exercise can help their anxiety, depression, and stress levels in particular.

Educate Yourself

When you begin to learn more about your diagnosis you may start to feel less scared or overwhelmed. Knowledge can help you feel empowered and ready to work through any struggles you may be facing.

Join a Support Group

There are so many online support groups that you can look into and use to connect with others. Having people in your life who have experienced similar things as you can help you to not feel so alone. They will probably understand your struggles and be willing to help talk you through situations.

Avoid Drugs and Alcohol

Illegal drugs and alcohol may end up making your symptoms worse. There is also a chance they will interact with any medication you may be taking. It is a good practice to avoid these.

Write a Journal

Writing down your feelings is very therapeutic. This also may help you to begin to see patterns or triggers. You can then bring up these thoughts or concerns with your therapist. Journaling can help you release your feelings or get out emotions that you find hard to vocalize to people verbally.

Relaxation and Stress Management

Meditation or yoga can be powerful tools in learning to find inner peace. Stress can have many negative physical and mental consequences. Learning to work with your mind and body to find calmness and happiness is a powerful thing.

Those suffering from personality disorders like borderline personality disorder may feel overwhelmed and scared at receiving a diagnosis.
