Many of us struggling with addiction and mental illness are also empathic, meaning we feel other people’s feelings alongside them and have a tendency to absorb their energy, whether that energy is negative or positive. For many of us, this can mean we’re impacted strongly by other people’s depression, anxiety and other mental health issues, as well as their addictions. We can find ourselves easily triggered by someone else’s stress, emotional breakdowns, or their relapses. When they feel overwhelmed emotionally and turn to their drugs of choice to cope, we can find ourselves tempted to do the same. How can we better protect our energy to support our recovery?
Increasing Our Mindfulness Around Energy
One thing we can do is to become more mindful of the energy we bring as well as others. Our energy is impacted by everything we think, feel, do and say. It is the culmination of our thoughts and feelings and our behaviors and choices. Our energy has to do with how we think and feel about ourselves and the effect we have on other people. When we are operating from the energy of pain and self-destructiveness, we extend that feeling and bring other people down as well. When we are mentally and emotionally unwell, we can energetically harm other people’s well-being in addition to our own. We often don’t know much about energy, how to cultivate it, how to heal it, or how to transform it. We tend to think we need to release anything which doesn’t serve us, but as we know from our struggles with addiction, this can be easier said than done. By increasing our mindfulness around energy, we become more observant of how we think and feel and the impact we are having on other people.
Energetic Healing and Protection
Becoming more energy conscious teaches us to tools to protect ourselves from other people’s negative energy, and enables us to transmute any negative energies we absorb from external sources. We become better able to heal any energetic imbalances we incur. Powerful energy healing methods we can try are Reiki and tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique). We can visualize ourselves creating a strong energetic protective shield around ourselves and use meditation and prayer to help protect our energy. Since our minds are so much more powerful than we might assume, we can use the power of our thoughts, meditation, and visualization to help protect our energy.
