Try This Type of Meditation to Begin Healing from Trauma

The pain we’ve experienced as either a child or adult can linger on within us, affecting our relationship with ourselves, others, and the world around us. Trauma can incite anger, depression, confusion, and spiritual turmoil at times, making it difficult for us to face the days ahead. If you’ve been in the process of healing from past trauma but aren’t quite sure where to turn to next, a holistic approach could be just what you need. Holistic activities include mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and other forms of expression that consider our whole being, with all of our thoughts, experiences, knowledge, and more. Meditation is practiced all over the world and has been used for decades to help individuals find healing and enlightenment.

We use meditation to feel grounded and connected to our existence, and we often practice meditation by focusing our thoughts or attention on a particular object, thought, or present moment. If you experienced trauma as a child, there is a beautiful form of meditation that can help you find healing:

  1. Sit (or stand) comfortably and close your eyes if you feel comfortable doing so.
  2. Take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth, feeling the rise and fall of your stomach as you continue to breathe.
  3. Begin imagining yourself as a child, picture that little you at age 4,5,6, or whatever age you were experiencing the trauma.
  4. As you imagine this, that younger you may be crying, upset, or in pain – your younger self may be feeling lost, scared, hopeless, angry, and more.
  5. Envision that you’re able to provide love and support to your younger self, and imagine hugging yourself as a child, telling yourself all the things you needed to hear at that age. Some examples of this could be,
  • “I know you’re hurting. I am here for you. You are strong, and you will get through this.”
  • “I understand you’re scared. It’s perfectly normal to feel this way. We will get through this storm together.”
  1. As you tell yourself these words of love, support, and wisdom, imagine your inner child feeling more at peace, more content, and more confident moving forward.
  2. From time to time, practice envisioning yourself this way, and talk your inner child through whatever is causing you distress. In time, you will begin to heal yourself, piece by piece.
