self-acceptance

“Your journey has molded you for your greater good, and it was exactly what it needed to be. Don’t think you’ve lost time. There is no short-cutting to life. It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. And now is right on time.”
Asha Tyson

It is quite common when navigating the waters of early recovery to look back and feel guilt or remorse over having “lost time.” Also, you may find it difficult to accept the consequences of your choices, causing a significant decrease in your sense of self-value. Recognize that each experience you have had on life’s journey has been instrumental in getting you to this current place of healing.

This recognition is a vital step toward unconditional self-acceptance. Unconditionally accepting yourself does not mean accepting intolerable circumstances or treatment. Instead, we should focus on embracing the truth of our experiences. Unconditional Self Acceptance means separating YOU from your behaviors and idiosyncrasies. Therapist Russell Grieger defines unconditional self-acceptance this way, “You accept that, as a fallible human being, you are less than perfect. You will often perform well, but you will also err at times. You always and unconditionally accept yourself without judgment” (Grieger, 2013).

Discovering your purpose and unique place in the world is made possible when you can accept yourself unconditionally. Try to fully embrace Judy Crane’s mantra: “we are not bad people trying to get good; we are wounded people trying to heal.” When you stop judging yourself and allowing your behavior to determine your worth, you are in a much better position. You can finally take responsibility for making necessary changes toward healing the wounds that have held you captive and contributed to your feelings of worthlessness.

Learning to accept every aspect of yourself without judgment frees you up to love and embrace the unique valuable person that you are. This starts with believing that right where you are is precisely where you need to be. Wherever you are on your journey to recovery, you are “right on time.”
