Jack and Jill went up a hill to fetch a pail of water.

Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after.

Needless to say, the day that Jack and Jill went up that hill to fetch a pail of water, it probably didn’t turn out the way they thought it would. We have no resolution to this story. Did Jack fix his crown? Was Jill injured in her tumble? What we do have is a perfect metaphor for why concierge style treatment matters for trauma recovery.

Consider the idea that what Jack and Jill endured that day was trauma. Thinking they would just go up the hill, fetch the pail of water, and come back down, Jack and Jill might have been shocked by the events that took place. Trauma can be defined as any life event which changes the way an individual sees themselves, the world around them, and their place in that world. Falling down, breaking a crown, and tumbling down a hill could have been enough for Jack and Jill to feel traumatized by their experience.

Most people will experience trauma, but only some will develop symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder of any kind. Two people can have the same traumatic experience and have two very different experiences of coping with that trauma, because their experience of the trauma, though shared, is completely different. Both Jack and Jill experienced something unexpected and frightening on that day. Jack fell and broke his crown. Jill went tumbling. Two different experiences. One shared trauma. Two different people. Two different responses.

Jack might develop depression while Jill might develop anxiety. Jack might turn to overeating to cope while Jill might turn to restrictive eating behaviors. Jack might abuse alcohol while Jill might have a pattern of abusive relationships with others. Jack might develop a severe psychiatric disorder while Jill develops a drug addiction. As always, it is possible that Jack and Jill will go on to live seemingly completely normal lives which don’t necessitate any urgent attention. Yet inside, they suffer immensely from emotional pain caused by the day their world was turned upside down.

If Jack and Jill were to go to treatment for their varying issues, they would need treatment for their trauma. Jack and Jill might develop the same exact reactions to their trauma, however, what they experienced is distinctly different, which means their treatment plans must be distinctly different.

Concierge style treatment means offering a wholly customized, tailor made treatment which is specific to the genetics, trauma, symptoms, and needs of each individual client. Offering the same exact treatment to both Jack and Jill would be a moot effort. Jack broke his crown. Jill went tumbling. Their needs are different.
