Why We Came, Why We StayRegardless of our experiences before we begin our recovery, we all shared similar feelings. Hopelessness, degradation, and pain were running rampant in our lives. Happiness felt like a fictional state of being, and we had very little peace of mind. The relief was hard to find, and it seemed like the damage was just piling up around us. Problems in relationships, friendships, and family members appeared to be irreparable. We had financial struggles, issues at work, or possibly were unable to work. The belief that we could overcome these challenges and our addictions looked impossible.

We enter our recovery with the uncertainty of what to do next. Our options and efforts had been exhausted, and yet we couldn’t seem to stop repeating the same pattern, stuck in a never-ending cycle. Every one of us felt some degree of misery and desperation. Seeking a new solution, one that had proven to work for so many others was the next best step. Some of us fully subscribed to the idea that a 12-Step program was the way to repair our lives and our spirits. Others came in with more resistance to the idea but had found nothing else to be working no matter how hard they tried. Whatever our expectations, we knew that there had to be a better way to live. Our lives were unmanageable, and we couldn’t restore our lives or fix the damage on our own.

Throughout the recovery process, we find that many of our problems are the same as those around us. A solution becomes a reality and the promises that we will recover come true. We realize that we are not alone in our struggle, and there are plenty of others with the same experiences who are recovering and eager to help us heal as well. Many of us find a sense of community for the first time. As every day goes by, the weight of our issues and our demons lightens. At meetings, we can share our experiences and fears, and find that there are people who understand and relate to us. Working through the steps, one by one, we tackle all of the struggles we once thought were hopeless. Strength and confidence return. Fear and misery leave us. With the help of a sponsor, we address the root of our problems and begin to understand how we played a role in our own demise. The damaged relationships we assumed were permanently broken slowly begin to mend. Peace and happiness are no longer myths.

One of the best things about life in recovery is just that, we are able to restore and enjoy our lives. We find talents that we never knew we had. Newfound clarity allows us to build friendships and connect with others. Taking on a new level of dedication and responsibility, we find new career paths and continue learning every day. There is a new lust for life and we find things to be grateful for daily. Where we once felt hopeless, we see that our possibilities are truly endless. Recovery makes all of this possible and continues to do so as long as we show up and put in the work.
