“The transformation I’m most passionate about isn’t physical – it’s perspective.” — Dr. Boff

At The Guest House, we believe that lasting recovery requires addressing the whole person. Trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges affect far more than thoughts and emotions. They impact the body, nervous system, movement patterns, energy levels, sleep, and overall well-being.
That’s why functional movement and wellness are an important part of our trauma-centered approach to healing.
Designed by Marc H. Boff, DPT, ATC, CES, PES, our Movement and Wellness Program helps guests reconnect with their bodies in a safe, intentional, and restorative way. Through individualized assessment and movement-based wellness strategies, guests learn how physical health can support emotional healing and long-term recovery.

Functional movement focuses on how the body moves through everyday life.
Rather than emphasizing athletic performance or intense exercise, functional movement helps improve mobility, balance, strength, flexibility, coordination, and overall physical function.
Many people arrive at treatment feeling disconnected from their bodies. Years of chronic stress, trauma, substance use, anxiety, depression, or emotional overwhelm can create patterns of tension, fatigue, physical discomfort, and nervous system dysregulation.
Functional movement helps restore that connection and helps the body respond to stress.
Our trauma-centered philosophy recognizes that meaningful recovery often involves reconnecting with the body in a safe and supportive environment, which is why we’ve introduced this method into our treatment.

When people think about recovery, they often focus on emotional healing.
And while emotional healing is essential, the body is also an important part of the process.
Chronic stress, unresolved trauma, addiction, and mental health challenges can contribute to many health problems.
Movement and wellness practices help address these physical challenges while creating opportunities for healing and growth. And for many guests, learning to reconnect with their bodies becomes an important part of rebuilding trust in themselves.

However, when integrated into a comprehensive trauma-centered treatment plan, it can become a powerful complement to clinical care.
Functional movement and wellness may help individuals:
Physical movement can support nervous system regulation and help individuals respond more effectively to everyday stressors.
Movement often creates opportunities to notice physical sensations, emotional responses, and stress patterns that may otherwise go unnoticed.
As strength, mobility, and physical function improve, many individuals experience increased confidence and a stronger sense of capability.
Recovery is not only about overcoming immediate challenges. It is about creating sustainable habits that support health and well-being over time.
By helping guests establish realistic and personalized wellness routines, Dr. Boff’s work supports long-term growth beyond treatment.

At The Guest House, we believe healing is most effective when it addresses every aspect of a person’s experience.
Whether someone is struggling with trauma, addiction, mental health challenges, or the effects of chronic stress, our goal is to provide compassionate, individualized care that supports lasting transformation.
