Can We Use Affirmations to Help Ourselves Quit?

Our Subconscious Minds: the Operating Systems of Our Lives

The more we learn about our addictions, the more we discover the power of our subconscious minds to direct how we function in life and what kinds of patterns we create. Because they store our emotional information, our subconscious minds are like the operating systems of our lives, directing how we think and feel, how we operate, what decisions we make, and what behaviors we choose. One of the things we learn about healing, especially healing from mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, is that positive affirmations can reprogram our subconscious minds and totally redirect our thoughts, emotions, choices, and behaviors. Can affirmations help us in our addiction recovery as well?

Reprogramming Our Harmful Belief Systems

Positive affirmations can help us to break any unhealthy habit, stop any toxic cycle and put an end to any recurring pattern we want to shed. They are powerful for healing any part of our lives, including our addictions. Much of our subconscious programming around addiction tells us that we’re destined for failure, that recovery is impossible for us, and that we don’t deserve to be happy. The ways in which we relentlessly self-identify as hopeless, struggling addicts, rather than as recovering addicts, for example, are some of the many ways in which we compound the harmful subconscious programming contributing to our addictions. When we use affirmations, we start to chip away at that old programming, and we create brand new programming that serves us in our healing and recovery.
