How Do I Start Journaling?

Adding journaling to your life can be a wonderful method of reflection. Life can be unpredictable and tracking our milestones and musings can be beneficial on a daily basis as well as in the future.

Writing can act as a form of solace in difficult times, it can be a remembrance of celebrations and achievements, and it can be a great way to track your daily life and growth as a person.

While it’s something many of us have desired to start doing, it can become an idea that we think or talk about, but never get around to doing. If you have been considering adding journaling to your routine, here are some ways to get started!

 

Pick a Journal

First and foremost, choose a journal! You can find them in many stores, online, at gift shops, boutiques, and souvenirs.

Try not to overanalyze this step! Your journal’s appearance can have significance to you, but the most important parts will be inside. Remember not to judge a book by its cover!

 

Set Aside Some Time Daily 

Choose a time of day, perhaps first thing in the morning or right before bed, to write in your journal. Adding anything to your daily routine takes discipline and dedication.

Hold yourself accountable to write at least something small once a day, even if it is a brief check-in. Don’t give yourself parameters, there is no right or wrong way to journal.

If you can only manage some bullet points or ideas and don’t have time for full sentences that detail your entire day, that’s alright! The more you exercise the practice of journaling, the more fulfilling it will be. You’ll look forward to that part of your day, and the introspection and relaxation it brings.

 

Experiment with Prompts

Falling into the routine of writing our day-to-day actions and thoughts can occasionally feel monotonous and repetitive. If you’d like to try sometime new and exciting, try searching for some writing prompts online!

This can be a fun way to explore your imagination or to access your dreams and goals. Write about the funniest moment in your life.

Describe in detail your dream house. Imagine what new technology will be introduced in the world in the next five years.

There are so many topics to discover and these can make journaling fun or refreshing. When you look back at your entries later on in life, you may be inspired or see that you achieved some of your goals!

Journaling is an excellent way to alleviate stress and check-in with yourself on a daily basis. Hold yourself accountable for writing a small entry at least once a day and you will be amazed by the rewards for your self-care routine.
