The stresses of daily life can affect your whole body and manifest in a number of negative ways. For those experiencing trauma, addiction, or mental health conditions, these daily stresses may feel impossible to handle. A great method for releasing pent-up stress is Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT. This technique can help you overcome seemingly hopeless conditions and allow you to heal your mind, body, and soul.
How Does EFT Work?
Many studies have shown the effectiveness of EFT for self-healing. According to a 2019 study in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine, EFT is a “brief intervention combining elements of exposure, cognitive therapy, and somatic stimulation of acupressure points on the face and body.”
When a person practices EFT, they will identify a concern they wish to address. Common concerns can include anxiety, addiction, health issues, or anything else that holds a negative charge. The concern is usually addressed as a sentence like this: “Even though I have [this concern/issue], I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
As this sentence is repeated, the participant will tap meridian points, or energy spots, on the body. The 2019 study calls this a “somatic tapping process” that uses eight spots. These spots usually include the top of the head, over the eyebrows, under the eyes, the chin, the collarbone, under the armpits, and the wrist.
Why Does EFT Work?
As concerns are “tapped out” through EFT, energy is released through the pressure points. In a research population, stress is measured on a scale called “Subjective Unit of Distress” (SUDS). The participant will repeat the process until the SUD significantly decreases.
A number of studies have found that EFT can significantly reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. It can also move “stuck” energy thanks to tapping on meridian points, a somatic practice.
Somatic Therapy
EFT and other somatic therapies have been shown to greatly help individuals process anxiety, depression, and trauma. According to Frontiers in Psychology, trauma generates tremendous energy due to the “fight or flight” survival mode. This energy can become fixed in “specific patterns of neuromuscular readiness or collapse” instead of being freed from the body.
When a person utilizes somatic healing methods like EFT, these fight or flight patterns and other negative energy can be moved out of the body. EFT can also help individuals get to the root of their addictive patterns and allow them to fully heal.
Healing at The Guest House
Often, traditional Western medicine will aim to put a “Band-Aid” on conditions like trauma, addiction, or anxiety by solely prescribing medication. If traditional treatment hasn’t worked for you, pent-up somatic energy could be a reason.
Somatic therapy at The Guest House can help you process and alleviate pent-up energy. This physical approach to therapy uses methods like massage, stretching, light movement, exercise, and acupuncture.
We offer a wide variety of modalities to complement your somatic healing. Meditation, yoga, music healing, and other therapies can help you fully heal from your condition and re-discover the joys of a stress-free life.
Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is a widely-studied method that can release pent-up somatic energy from the body.
