In our modern Western world, it seems like medication is the answer to everything. While medication can be beneficial in certain instances, it’s not the only way to heal trauma or behavioral health conditions.
Lasting Effects of Trauma
Research has shown a strong link between trauma, health conditions, behavioral health disorders, and other long-term effects. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), “many people who experience a traumatic event will go on with their lives without lasting negative effects.” However, many more will have difficulty and experience “traumatic stress reactions.” SAMSHA notes that people can overcome traumatic experiences with “appropriate supports and intervention.” Unfortunately, most people will go without these services.
Somatic Memory and Energy Stores
According to the Harvard Review of Psychiatry, researchers have noted that trauma is “stored in somatic memory and expressed as changes in the biological stress response.” The fact that trauma can be stored somatically, or specifically in the body, is crucial to understanding how to treat it. This is especially important in a world where there’s a revolving door of treatment programs, and medications are given out around the clock.
Healing Trauma Without Medication
In recent years, research has found many benefits of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat those who have had traumatic experiences. CAM treatments like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and acupuncture can help move lingering energy out of the body.
Treatment Methods
In 2013, The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease conducted a study to observe the effects of EFT on a population of veterans who struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). By the time the study was over, it found that 90% of those who experienced EFT no longer met PTSD clinical criteria.
Breathwork is another method that can help people overcome traumatic experiences. When a person focuses on controlled breathing, they can move energy through the body and form a deeper mind-body connection. Other methods that do not involve medication can include somatic therapy, sound healing, meditation, and even exercise.
