Detox in Florida: How Do I Find the Right Program?

Detox is the first step towards a substance-free life. It is important to find the right program, though.

How to Find a Good Detox Program

A good detox program will understand the importance of co-morbid mental illnesses and substance abuse. They will offer mental health care that addresses the underlying causes of addiction, including trauma and mental illness. They will encourage their patients to engage in group therapy, support groups, and 12-Step programs. A good program understands that detox is not the end, and they assist their patients in finding continued care.

Detox in Florida

If an individual is at a point where they need a medically supervised detox program, they might want to consider going to Florida. Florida is home to many detox, rehab, and mental health treatment centers. The state laws offer many protections for people with mental illnesses and substance abuse issues. They treat mental health care as a fundamental right.

Patients are not forced into inhumane treatment environments. They can initiate and discontinue care at will, with a few notable exceptions. Treatment facilities cannot refuse care to an individual based on the inability to pay. Certain populations are eligible for state-covered mental health and substance abuse treatment.

The Marchman Act

In Florida, the Marchman Act provides mandatory assistance to people with severe substance use disorder (SUD). If a person is on Florida soil, a medical professional or law enforcement officer can place them on an involuntary hold for up to five days. To do this, the person must meet the following criteria:

  • Cannot control their substance use
  • Poses a danger to themselves or others
  • Cannot choose to seek treatment due to substance abuse

If a person’s family wants to pursue a Marchman Act hold, they need to contact a doctor, psychologist, addiction treatment center, or police department. They should try to convince the person in need to voluntarily enter treatment first. NIDA’s Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment: A Research-Based Guide (Third Edition) states, “Treatment does not need to be voluntary to be effective.” It is better for the stability of the social system if all parties make the decision together, though.
