Big T’s and Little T’s in Trauma

We know that trauma can have a lasting impact on any individual. However, it is typical to think of trauma as only happening to veterans or sexual assault survivors.

While “big T” traumas are traumatic events that leave you to little or no control, there are also “little T” traumas that many people experience, and can still cause you to develop PTSD symptoms

Little T Trauma

Little T trauma events disrupt our emotional functioning. They can be common events that happen to a lot of people, but still leave us feeling traumatized, like divorce, infidelity, moving away, or financial difficulties. These events may not be life-threatening, but they can leave a person feeling helpless.

Little T traumas tend to be overlooked by individuals, because they feel like these events are so common and therefore not worth feeling these intense emotions. This means they will not recognize how disturbed that moment in their life made them, so they avoid seeking treatment. If a number of little T traumas occur within a short time span, it can result in a big T trauma.

Big T Trauma

Big T trauma is a significant event that may not happen all the time, but still leaves you helpless because of the loss of control you experience. It can be moments like a natural disaster, sexual assault, terrorist attack, combat, or a car accident.

Big T traumas are more easily identified by people with PTSD, as well as anyone else familiar with that experience. Avoidances for big T’s are more drastic—people with PTSD may avoid crowded places or anything else that reminds them of the trauma. One big T is enough to cause severe distress and interfere with daily functioning.

What to Do About Any Form of Trauma
