What Does Our Energy Have to Do With Our Addictions?

When we think of our addictions, we tend to define them as an ongoing problem we have with an addictive substance or behavior. We know we’ve formed a dangerous dependence, but we aren’t always sure why. We usually associate our addictions with mental and emotional health issues, such as our depression and anxiety, the traumatic experiences that have fueled our unwellness, and the life issues we’ve been struggling with for so long. We think of our addictions as being related to our thoughts, feelings and behaviors, so when we do the inner work to heal, we focus mainly on mental, emotional and behavioral approaches, such as traditional talk therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We don’t always see that our bodies and our energy systems have as much to do with our addictions and mental health issues as our thinking minds and our emotions. What does our energy have to do with our addictions?

Energetic Imbalances

Many of us struggle with addictions and other related issues such as compulsive self-harm because all of the internal self-destructiveness we’re carrying and pain we’ve experienced have been stored physically and energetically inside of us. Our organs and our energy pathways, or meridians, are literally storing all of the pain of our mental and emotional issues and imbalances. We don’t tend to think of our physical bodies as being connected to our thoughts and feelings, but in truth, all of our parts and systems are closely interconnected and related to one another. Many of us are dealing with intense physical and energetic imbalances that fuel our mental health issues and that are in turn exacerbated by them. Once we learn that our mental and emotional health issues are also physical and energetic in nature, we discover that our addictions and internal self-destructiveness may be attributable to underlying causes that we’re not aware of, that are related to our physical bodies and energy systems.

Energy Healing Practices

To correct our energetic imbalances and help ourselves heal, we can try energy healing practices such as Reiki and tapping, also called Emotional Freedom Technique. Yoga and meditation are also healing practices that incorporate physical and energetic restoration in addition to mental and emotional healing. When we commit to a wellness practice that takes into account all of our systems, we create a foundation of happiness and inner peace that many of us have never experienced before. We find clarity, stillness and calm. We feel naturally more self-loving and self-accepting. We develop an internal energy of peace that is far more conducive to sobriety than the inner turmoil we were used to.
