How Long Do I Have to Go to Therapy? Now that you have a little bit of sobriety time under your belt, you could be wondering how long you should continue attending therapy. You may have started therapy in your rehabilitation facility, or you may have decided to go on your own. There could come a time when you will question whether you need therapy anymore and need to find the answers.

Talk to your therapist

Part of being in therapy is working towards transparency. If you cannot talk to your psychologist about your concerns, then you may not be working with the right therapist. A therapist’s job is to be unbiased to your specific situation while guiding you with your best interest at heart. You and your therapist may be on the same page believing your therapy may be coming to an end, or they may lead you into another area of growth. Whatever the outcome might be, bring your truth to your therapist because your recovery depends on it.

Talk to your sponsor

If you are in recovery, you should also have a sponsor to help you along with any day-to-day stressors that come up. Your sponsor should know you very well, especially when it comes to providing direction on what to do. Guidance can also include discussing what you should do about therapy. Talking to them is essential because they have most likely seen your transformation firsthand and can provide insight regarding therapy.

If you are wondering how long you should be in therapy, you need to check your motives first. Are you just trying to get out of something that improves your life? Are you too busy to attend therapy? Do you think you have graduated from recovery, or that you’ve been cured? Are you still thinking about harming yourself? If you can say “”yes”” to any one of these questions, you may need to rethink your exit from therapy.

You should examine your recovery because there are circumstances that may indicate it’s time to move forward. When you find yourself stagnant in your growth even though you are giving it your all, you should bring your concerns to the right people. Doing so can help you to stay sober and keep you advancing in your recovery.
