“This Is Me” Is The Trauma Anthem You Need

The Greatest Showman was released in late 2017, offering the world an intoxicating soundtrack full of deeply personal songs. One song in particular, “This Is Me” spoke out to millions around the world, earning the song a Grammy Award and recognition from leaders. In the film, the song is sung by the band of “freaks” in a Circus who have been locked out of an event with “normal” people. Keala Settle plays “the bearded lady” who powerfully leads the drumming, climactic anthem which declares heart-wrenching truths about being a trauma survivor.

I am no stranger to the dark

Hide away, they say

We don’t want your broken parts.

I used to feel ashamed of all my scars

Hide away, they say

No one will love you as you are.

I won’t let them break me down to dust

I know that there’s a place for us

For we are glorious

“I am no stranger to the dark”

Trauma is one of the most isolating experiences there is on earth. The trauma we live through and the way it affects us makes us feel like we are completely alone in our life. Accompanied by shame, blame, and guilt, our trauma makes us feel like there is something wrong with us, something broken.

“Hide away, they say, We don’t want your broken parts. I used to feel ashamed of all my scars. Hide away, they say, No one will love you as you are”

Symptoms of PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder, manifest differently for each of us. We may experience mood disorders, personality disorders, addictions, or self-harming behaviors. Society would have us believe that these are the broken parts of us, and that because we are broken, we need to hide them away, reinforcing our beliefs that we are to be ashamed and live in isolation.

“I won’t let them break me down to dust I know that there’s a place for us, For we are glorious”

We have to hit a “bottom” in our lives at some point in order to recognize that the pain of living as we are is no longer wroth the struggle. All we need is one mustard seed of hope that we are not broken, we are not unlovable, and we do not have to be ashamed of our scars. Moreover, we have to believe that there is a place for us to heal, to recover, and to be seen, as well as loved, for exactly who we are.
