Everyone has beliefs. Often, the word belief is given a spiritual or religious connotation. We can have beliefs and belief systems that are spiritual and religious. A belief can be defined as “an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists”. Looking at this definition of belief, we can begin to understand that our beliefs are held in all areas of our lives, for better or for worse.

We hold three core types of beliefs. Within each of those core types of beliefs are many different subtypes of beliefs. First, we hold beliefs about ourselves. Second, we hold beliefs about others. Lastly, we hold beliefs about the world around us. Our beliefs in each of these areas shape our perceptions and perspectives which ultimately shape our reality. When we examine our beliefs, identify them, articulate them, and discover their origin, we are empowered to make a decision about our reality. “Belief is a powerful thing”, MMA fighter TJ Dillashaw stated. Beliefs are so powerful that they can shape how we feel about ourselves, others, and the world around us. Once we realize that our beliefs shape our reality and our beliefs can be changed, we start to change the reality of our lives.

Perhaps we believe that we are worthless. We also believe that other people believe that we are worthless. In addition, we believe that there is no room for a worthless person like ourselves in the world and that the world will reject us. These are painful beliefs which cause low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, self-consciousness, as well as manifestations of these issues like substance abuse, eating disorders, and other self-harming behaviors. We aren’t born with beliefs. Our beliefs are given to us, created for us, and adopted by us over time. Our beliefs of worthlessness might have come from a traumatic rejection, neglect, or abandonment. If we look at every part of ourselves, and what the real meaning of worthlessness is, could we continue to believe this painful belief to be true? Problematically, most people don’t examine their beliefs very often. Instead, they live under the control of their beliefs, rather than the other way around. Should we choose to stop believing we are worthless, that others think we are worthless, and that the world thinks we are worthless, we can start believing something else. Instantaneously we are given a new hope, a new perspective, and a refreshed sense of self we haven’t had in some time. We see ourselves differently, people around us differently, and the world we live in differently.
