An Adult Woman Sitting in The Park Alone

Learning to regulate and control your emotions is an essential life skill to master. We all need to understand why we feel the way we feel and how we can navigate those emotions and situations.

If you struggle with mental health issues or addiction, regulating your emotions can be a challenging task at times that needs to be practiced and cultivated.  Here are a few strategies you can try out while you work with a mental health professional to better understand how to regulate and control your emotions.

#1. Problem-Solving

Looking for the root cause of your emotions or struggles is a great place to start. Where are these strong feelings coming from? Many times events in our past affect our current mental health.

#2. Emotional Support

Having a strong support system in place is an integral part of working on your mental health issues. We all need support. Whether that support comes from family members or friends, it is always necessary to have people you feel safe and comfortable talking with and who you can accept support from.

#3. Reappraisal

If you are struggling to regulate your emotions, try to think about the situation differently. Try to look at the situation from a new angle or perspective. Utilizing this strategy often takes some practice, so remember to keep an open mind as you think through events and situations and how you feel about them.

#4. Emotional Expression

When we keep our emotions bottled up inside us, these emotions eventually become hard to control. These emotions may even come out completely different than what is actually bottled up inside.

Work on expressing your emotions in a productive and straightforward manner. Not only will doing so help you, but also it will help your support system to better understand how to help you.

#5. Gather Information

What happened in the situation? Was anyone else involved? What specific emotions are you experiencing, and when did they begin? Gathering information about the event or situation will help you to better regulate your emotions.

Learning to regulate and understand your emotions is an important skill to learn. When we can better understand what we are feeling, it can become easier to regulate those feelings. Try to analyze what you are feeling and gather information about the situation. Work on expressing feelings and looking at situations from new perspectives.
