Loneliness is something that can have a significant impact on someone’s life. Loneliness can increase isolation and mental health struggles and can negatively impact your overall well-being as well.

If you are struggling with mental health issues or addiction, you may be experiencing loneliness and not even fully understand where it is coming from or how to begin to feel better. Everyone can feel lonely sometimes, even when surrounded by people.

If you are feeling intense loneliness, reach out for professional help. If you are beginning a journey to understand your loneliness better, here are few tips to keep in mind.

Acknowledge Your Feelings

Try to acknowledge your feelings as they happen. What are you typically doing when you notice that you are feeling lonely? What do you do when these feelings occur?

Having a plan in place for when you experience intense feelings or emotions can help you to be able to work through these negative feelings in a healthy way.

Strengthen Current Relationships

Loneliness can be a powerful feeling. Try to remember the good relationships you do have in your life. If you cannot see the people you are close to as often as you would like, try to change that. If they live far away, try to see them virtually by using Skype or Facetime. If possible, work on scheduling time to see each other in person.

Everyone leads busy lives, and it can be challenging to coordinate schedules. If the person or people live relatively close to you, try to block off some time for dinner together or do an activity together.

Form New Relationships

There are many ways for you to make some new relationships. Join a sports team or a club where you can meet others with similar interests. You may also find some terrific virtual clubs and groups you can join if you are unable to meet with others in person.

Loneliness can be consuming. It can increase isolation and stifle growth. If you struggle with your mental health or addiction in addition to loneliness, you may feel overwhelmed and confused. Try to acknowledge what you are feeling when you are feeling it. Take time to connect with your loved ones and dedicate some time to spend together. You may also find comfort in forming new connections by joining clubs or groups. Here at The Guest House, we understand how challenging loneliness can be. We are here to help.
