envyEnvy is an emotion that happens when a person feels they lack another’s superior quality, such as an achievement or possession. When we are envious, we may wish we had that quality or possession that the other person has, or we may wish that they did not have it. Living in such a social media-driven society, you may find that you have become much more envious than you used to be.

Envy is something that everyone struggles with at one time or another throughout life. When those envious thoughts begin to affect your daily life or your goals, we start to consider it a problem that needs to be addressed. Here are a few thoughts to keep in mind if you find yourself feeling envious.

Success Doesn’t Always Mean Happiness

If you find yourself envious of another person’s success, you are not alone. Many people experience some jealous twinges when someone succeeds at something, and we can be left feeling as if we are failing because we have not achieved the same level of success. An important point to remember is that success and happiness are not the same. Just because a person is incredibly successful does not mean they are happy. Try to remember what you truly want out of life, and work towards that.

Study Others’ Success

If someone succeeds in an area that you want to succeed in, then study that success. How did they accomplish their goals? What did they do to get to the level you want to reach? Learning from others is a great resource.

Focus on Your Goals

There will always be people around you, especially on social media, who flaunt their success. Social media has a way of letting people show the good stuff and hide the bad stuff pretty easily. You see what others want you to see. Focus on your own goals. Determine the steps you need to take to reach those goals and continue to push forward.

You are not alone if you have experienced feelings of envy towards another. When other people succeed, have possessions, or accomplish goals, we may feel jealous that it is not happening to us. Social media has a way of letting others showcase their success and hide what they want to hide. Focus on your goals, and keep moving towards the life that you want.
