5 Signs You’re Developing Depression

Note: If you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. Your life matters.

Even if you consider yourself extremely successful in your business career thus far, that doesn’t mean that depression can hit you. For many people, depression arises out of a number of factors: family or relationship problems, unresolved trauma, overworking, neglecting important self-care activities, substance abuse, and more. Depression can creep into our lives slowly, until one day we find ourselves hiding from the very people, places, and activities that we used to enjoy. Mental Health Awareness Week is all about recognizing the signs of mental illness and taking steps towards seeking help – if you believe you may have depression, it’s best to seek treatment now before your symptoms get worse. Too many people are living with depression untreated, and this is significantly impacting their ability to work, form relationships, engage in social activities, and other components that make up our quality of life.

Take into consideration the following signs of depression, and see if you recognize any of this for yourself:

  1. Changes in sleeping, eating, and energy levels
  2. Difficulty concentrating
  3. Feelings of sadness or hopelessness
  4. Agitation, irritability, and/or excessive crying
  5. Slowness in activity or thoughts of suicide

Andrew Solomon, author of the award-winning book titled Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression shared his experience of being successful while also struggling with depression. He told PBS.org“I was publishing my first novel at the time, and it came out to rather nice reviews. I simply didn’t care. All my life I dreamed of publishing a novel, and now here it was, and all I felt was nullity.”

Depression creates a sort of blockage in the mind, and this makes it difficult to think or even feel sometimes. You may even find yourself dreading getting up to go to work in the morning, even if you’ve enjoyed the work you do your entire professional career. Symptoms of depression can become exacerbated if not treated early on, so it’s extremely important that you seek help for your symptoms.

Business professionals have unique needs, and there are some professional treatment centers dedicated to this exact population. With ultimate comfort and privacy, you can work on your mental health recovery while also maintaining the aspects of your business that need to be managed.
