The idea of treatment can inspire a scoff from many. Treatment programs today are loaded with a variety of evidence-based and non-evidence-based therapeutic applications, from traditional psychotherapy to cognitive behavioral therapy, from equine therapy to art therapy, from massage to acupuncture, from brain mapping to neurofeedback. Whether clinical or holistic in nature, the amount of therapies, amenities, and seemingly “luxury” offerings for mental illness treatment receive criticism from those who certainly aren’t, but might consider themselves experts. Without intimate understanding of the complexities of mental illness and the necessity for a variety of treatment applications for healing mental illness, what is offered in a treatment program can seem superfluous.
A study by researchers at University of Washington and Case Western Reserve University published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in October found that when a patient chooses their treatment, their treatment for PTSD is more successful. Patients at two different clinics were offered two choices of treatment to try, medication or prolonged exposure and some were given one or the other as treatment. The patients who had a choice “showed a greater reduction in symptoms, were more apt to stick to their treatment program and even lost their PTSD diagnosis overtime”, according to Science Daily.
Treatment providers and professionals have known, for quite some time, that having a variety of treatment options matters for treating complex issues like post-traumatic stress disorder and other manifestations of trauma. Having a variety of treatment options isn’t a lack of professionalism or understanding on the part of the treatment center. Rather, it is opening up the experience of self-expression to the guest. Being locked into a box of what treatment “should be” and how treatment applications “should work” doesn’t provide the room for authentic expression in the case of complex issues like PTSD. Every single person experiences trauma differently and will therefore need a different course of treatment to experience total healing. A variety of treatment options allows guests to find out what works best for them and know that their clinical team will support exploring that avenue of therapy. Where one guest might have a breakthrough with horses another might have a breakthrough on a zip-line course.
