How Can I Celebrate National Recovery Month?

September is National Recovery Month, sponsored by SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The series of events and campaigns are dedicated to increasing awareness of mental health and substance abuse, as well as increasing the general public’s understanding of mental health and substance abuse. Addiction and mental health issues receive an unfortunate amount of criticism, shame, and stigma in the United States focusing more on the “addicts” and the “mentally ill” instead of focusing on the potential for recovery, as well as the millions of people who are actively recovering every single day. National Recovery Month also serves as a means for celebration and to bring awareness to the miracle of recovery happening each and every day.

There are annual themes. For this year, SAMHSA has chosen “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.” According to the celebration’s website, the theme serves to explore “how integrated care, a strong community, sense of purpose, and leadership contributes to effective treatments that sustain the recovery of persons with mental and substance use disorders.” We can use these facets of the 2018 National Recovery Month celebration theme to celebrate.

Integrated Care

Learn more about the importance of treating mental health and substance abuse concurrently, rather than as separate issues. If you or someone in your life is seeking recovery, it is critical to understand the different types of care, transitioning through care levels, and how treatment centers integrate their care options.

Strong Community

There are recovery communities everywhere, all over the world. You can find community support locally, nationally, online, in support meetings, in 12-step groups, through treatment centers, and much more.

Sense Of Purpose

We all have a purpose in this life. When we are survivors of trauma and suffering from addictions, mental health issues, and related manifestations of our trauma, it can feel like our only purpose is to just get by. Recovery gives us the opportunity to explore not only our purpose but our passion. Make a point to explore different passions this month, look at your given skills and talents, and journal about what your purpose might be. Remember, when we are celebrating recovery, we are celebrating the shared purpose of carrying the message of miraculous possibility to everyone on earth.

Leadership

Become a leader in your world by taking charge of your life. If you are struggling with addiction, mental health, and other effects of trauma, help is available. The minute you ask for help is the minute your life starts to change for the better.
