What happens within your first thirty minutes of being awake can be a dictator of the rest of your day. There is reason we often trace the source of a bad day to “waking up on the wrong side of the bed”. If our day doesn’t start right, it can feel impossible to get it back on track. Thankfully, any day can be started over. At any moment, we have the ability to acknowledge where we are, compassionately embrace our experience, and consciously decide to shift gears. We can choose what story we want to tell ourselves that day. Unfortunately, it isn’t until we fully realize we have woken up and fallen into our feelings that we can change direction. Often, the journey to this recognition is decorated in distress, despair, and frustration. From the minute we wake up, we know that something is off with us. Taking the initiative to make a change requires awareness and action.

You notice you aren’t getting as much done

By the time you manage to put on your slippers, you would have already done your stretches, checked your calendar, brushed your teeth, and taken all of your vitamins. Feeling all of your feelings in an extreme way can slow you down and create “cognitive fuzz” which can get in the way of your ability to think clearly.

You make different apparel choices

On days when you are feeling your feelings the most, you might make different choices in your apparel. Instead of putting on a full, fresh outfit as you normally do, you put on something used, something dirty, or something comfortable.

You forget the basics

Halfway to your car, you realize you forgot some undergarments or you’re wearing your shoes without socks. Instead of your coffee in hand, you have a spatula, which should be flipping the eggs still on the stove. You feel confused and flustered because your head is spinning with your emotions.

You are a puddle of tears

Taking that first heavy sigh of emotional weight, you know the tears are coming. All it takes is one tiny trigger and your water works are flowing. Crying is normal and healthy in recovery and all areas of life. An indicator you are in your feelings is not being able to control and regulate your crying, feeling completely consumed by the act.
