Why is a Recovery Program Important?

Sometimes as we’re undertaking our journeys of recovery, we’re filled with so much excitement and optimism that we plow full steam ahead, diving head first into our sobriety without having a recovery program in place. We have faith in ourselves, and we’re pursuing our goal of sobriety with abandon. This can sometimes cause us to be reckless, to take less care with our healing than we should. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, we might be filled with so much confusion and overwhelm that we feel paralyzed by our fear, unsure of how to proceed with our recovery and therefore unable to make a plan for ourselves. We often aren’t aware of all of the possible causes for relapse and reasons why we might falter in our sobriety. Much of the time we haven’t done enough of the healing work required to keep us on track with our sobriety. Why is having a recovery program so important?

When we develop a recovery program for ourselves, especially with the help of professionals, we’re outlining all of the day-to-day logistical components of the work we’ll be doing. We’re also taking into account all of the mental, emotional and behavioral patterns we’ll be working to transform. We make a solid plan for ourselves that helps us to clarify our goals and set our intentions in order to give ourselves the best chance of success. We tackle all of the seemingly small but hugely important habits we’ve been developing and practicing over time, the habits that feed and perpetuate our addictions and mental health issues. We’re revamping our routines and redesigning our lifestyles to support sobriety. When we don’t do these very important things, we make ourselves far more susceptible to falling back into our addictive patterns and our tendencies to self-harm and self-destruct.

Part of our recovery program is creating a relapse prevention plan for ourselves. We want to be mindful of all the factors in our lives, the habits, patterns, relationships and issues, that might possibly contribute to relapse. We don’t want to assume that achieving initial sobriety will lead to lasting recovery. We want to create meaningful, profound, transformative change in our lives, and this requires clarity, mindfulness and planning. Our recovery program also requires that we summon the strength and the courage to do the inner healing work we’ve been resistant to. We want to give thought to all of the unresolved problems and unhealed fears and pain that have been fueling our addictions and work to address them as part of our recovery.
