Can Grief Therapy Help Me?

If you’re struggling with thoughts of suicide, PLEASE call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

There are many different kinds of therapy to take advantage of in our recovery, some more conventional while others are more holistic. One form of therapy we might not be familiar with is grief counseling. This particular kind of therapy helps us address the different forms of grief in our lives. It can be especially helpful if we’re dealing with a recent loss and coping with the incredible grief that can come with it. We might have lost someone because of a divorce or separation. We might have lost them to an illness, injury or accident. Whatever the cause of our loss, the depth of our grief can be so overwhelming it becomes debilitating.

How Can Grief Therapy Help?

Emotional Suppression

When it feels as though our grief has taken over our lives, causing us to be unable to live our lives as we normally would. Grief therapy can help us process and express our emotions when we might not otherwise be able to. We might be suppressing our difficult thoughts and feelings, especially if we’re afraid to share them with other loved ones who are also coping with grief from the same loss. We might be afraid to hurt the people in our lives or burden them with our pain.

Inability to Function

Being unable to function in our daily lives as a result of grief can take a tremendous toll on our overall health. We might start losing sleep,  experience loss of appetite, or find our relationships can suffer. We can become increasingly depressed and anxious. We may become restless and irritable. We can even experience chronic physical pain as a result of our grief. Holding onto our pain without being able to communicate it and make sense of it can compound our addictions, and we can find ourselves using our drugs of choice even more than normal to numb the pain of our grief.

When we’ve experienced a profound loss and are still reeling from the grief of that loss, it can feel as though we’ll never get over it. It will take us some time for us to heal from it, and there’s no precise timeline for when we’ll feel better, but grief counseling can help us come to terms with our loss and find peace around it.

At The Guest House Ocala, our recovery programs include many experiential modalities including traditional therapy, conscious connected breathwork, art healing, grief therapy, mindfulness and other forms of therapy.
