How Can We Retrain Our Minds?

As we’re working to recover from our addictions and mental health issues, we learn more about the different things we’ve been taught over the years and the various ways we’ve been mentally and emotionally conditioned that are detrimental to our well-being. We discover that we have more power over our thoughts, and therefore our feelings, than we might have assumed. We can train ourselves to direct our energy in ways that contribute to our wellness rather than detracting from it. How can we retrain our minds to support our healing?

Our Current Mental Conditioning

The first step in retraining our minds is to analyze its current conditioning. What negative thought patterns and limiting beliefs are you perpetuating, i.e. practicing thinking and feeling on a regular basis? Why are they harmful? Where did they come from? How did they develop? What traumatic experiences contributed to them? What thought patterns and emotional patterns are perpetuating them? This process of self-reflection can be overwhelming and difficult. We might feel as though we don’t know where to start. Seek out the help of a therapist, coach or energy healer to help you along the way.

Shadow Work

We want to get a clearer sense of how our minds have been conditioned. This is an ongoing process, and as we go, we’ll discover new things we hadn’t realized were part of our conditioning. We’ll want to stay as openminded as we can about the process, keeping in mind that our healing is a lifelong journey, and we don’t have to feel any pressure or expectation to have it all figured out at once. Let’s remember to be patient and compassionate with ourselves as more harmful patterns come to the surface. There is so much within us that has stayed buried for so long, and we want to support ourselves and be gentle and nurturing with ourselves as we uncover all of it. If we’re too hard on ourselves, if we’re impatient or unyielding, if we beat ourselves up for these things we’re discovering, we can stall our progress and stay stuck in our harmful patterns. This process is often referred to as shadow work, where we’re bringing our buried pain out into the light of our conscious awareness and giving it our attention and healing energy rather than continuing to avoid and suppress it.

Reprogramming the Subconscious Mind

To retrain our minds and shed our toxic limiting beliefs, we’ll need to reprogram our subconscious minds. Some of the best ways to do this are with repetition and the written word, so let’s write and repeat affirmations to establish new truths for ourselves. Another very helpful way to reprogram the subconscious mind is through visualization, so let’s meditate on whatever new belief, identity or thought pattern we want to establish and visualize it becoming our new reality.
