Jason Silva is regarded as a modern philosopher, a futurist enthralled by the wonderment of awe as a scientific function in our lives. He flies around the world to speak on awe and provide his wonderfully intellectual stimulations to audiences wanting to contemplate the experience of their existence on a deeper level. One of the many pieces of Silva’s career which launched his recognition are his videos called “Shots of Awe” in which Silva waxes philosophical on everything from nature to art, sex to love, and all the blissful mysteries of life itself.

“We have a responsibility to awe,” he has said. He’s said “Awe is the best drug in the world.” Watch any of his videos and you’ll find that his ecstatic excitement surrounding awe is contagious. That, he might argue, is the point of awe. By living your life with a healthy balance of awe, you can inspire others to have more awe in their lives as well. As a result, the world begins to thrive in a blissful place of curiosity, wonder, and joy.

Defining Awe defines awe as “an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, of the like.” From the definition, it can be understood that awe is an emotional experience which is completely consuming and transformative, thrusting the entirety of life on you all at once. If you are recovering from trauma and its many manifestations or seeking recovery from trauma and any of its manifestations, awe most likely sounds one of two ways. You are either enticed, curious, and desirous of it, or, you are intimidated and overwhelmed even by the thought of it.

Awe And Trauma

It could be said that the experience of trauma is, in a way, awe-striking. Awe can include overwhelming feelings of fear and the experience of trauma often includes those emotions. There is something peculiarly awe-inducing about trauma: when we experience trauma, we experience an instantaneous redefinition of everything we know to be true in the universe. Though we can experience the symptoms of trauma in a way that makes us feel like we are dying we also experience trauma as a distinct reminder we are alive. We have experienced life in some of its most fullness and we are continuing to survive in spite of it. Overall, the experience of living through and inspiring trauma is a matter of awe in and of itself- its an absolute wonder we can be present for the extremely powerful experience of trauma and fear.

Awe And Trauma Recovery

Once we seek treatment and therapy for trauma recovery, we find ourselves in a new state of awe. We are struck by the evolution we go through from the start of our treatment to the end and the rest of our recovery journey in life. Thought the course of our days, we find ourselves overwhelmed with gratitude, admiration of ourselves, and we witness the miracles of the sublime which work in our lives. Awe can be found in the process of recovery from trauma itself and in the ways we take task to curate it. We’ll discuss that in our next QA.
