mindfulness

Anxiety is a psychological, physiological, and behavioral state induced in animals and humans by a threat to wellbeing or survival, either actual or potential. It is characterized by increased arousal, expectancy, autonomic and neuroendocrine activation, and specific behavior patterns.”

Anxiety and Mindfulness

  • Experiencing anxiety can feel like being in the middle of a torrential storm with no end in sight. Our physiological response to anxiety may manifest in many ways: headache, depression, social isolation, or insomnia, to name a few. According to Harvard Health, “persistent anxiety can contribute to respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal problems, and heart disease.” Anxiety not only has the potential to cause physical damage but may also lead to relapse. “Symptoms of anxiety or depression….. are frequently associated with alcohol dependence and sometimes precede it.” Learning to manage our anxiety is an extremely valuable exercise in maintaining our sobriety and healing our trauma. Developing a mindfulness practice is one way we can effectively manage our Anxiety.

Mindfulness Practice

  • When incorporated into our daily routine, the practice of mindfulness can significantly reduce stress and
  •  anxiety. This practice helps us focus on what we are doing in the present moment rather than worrying about future or past events. While anxiety may cause feelings of restlessness and irritability, mindfulness creates wellbeing and hopefulness. Beginning a mindfulness practice does not need to be complicated. There are many online resources and videos readily available to assist in getting your practice started and underway. For example, Tara Brach’s meditation tool, R.A.I.N., or the Raisin Meditation developed by Jon-Kabat Zinn are perfect places to start.
  • Meditation enhances our ability to cope with distressing thoughts and feelings that may arise. When we shift our focus from past or future tense thinking to the present, we reset our minds and bodies to heal. Mindfulness can be an incredible tool to assist us on our journey to recovery, leading us to feelings of joy and self-compassion along the way.
