The recovery process can be daunting, intimidating, and overwhelming. If we plan too far ahead, we find ourselves filled with worry and anxiety, unable to move forward at all. We worry about the future of our sobriety and doubt our ability to make our recovery last. The prospect of returning to work or finding a new career nags at the back of our minds. We worry about the long-term potential of our relationships. Stressed out, we try to plan the rest of our lives because we feel comforted when we know how things are going to go. This certainty provides us with relief, but we’re rarely considering how often things change. We’re always evolving, learning, growing, and developing ourselves. Nothing is set in stone because our recovery is ever-changing. Can it help to take things one day at a time?

Releasing Fear and Pressure

Trying to plan too far ahead can be overwhelming for us. Taking things one day at a time means we can focus on just 24 hours. We don’t have to worry about next week or next year. All we have to do is focus on what we can accomplish today. This helps us simplify our to-do lists and ease our emotional burdens. We can release a great deal of fear because we’re mindfully and consciously choosing to stay in the present moment rather than obsessing about the future. This mindfulness practice allows us to release the pressure we’re putting on ourselves to have everything figured out. After all, we can never definitively know how things will turn out. We can feel much less overwhelmed when we take things one day at a time.

Going With the Flow

Taking things one day at a time means we recognize that something might be uncertain. We don’t have to have everything resolved or figured out right away. Instead, we learn to go with the flow, releasing the pressure we feel. With practice, we can lose the expectations we have of ourselves to achieve full certainty and perfection. The uncertainty of life becomes a comfortable place, and we can work on maintaining our inner peace. We can relax as we experience the unfolding of our lives. It’s time to focus our energy on healing and manifesting the lives we want for ourselves. This is impossible when we’re riddled with anxiety. However, by taking things one day at a time, we can achieve more than we ever dreamed.
