Self-Healing

“Gratitude shifts your perspective from lack to abundance and allows you to focus on the good in your life, which in turn pulls more goodness into your reality.”

-Jen Sincero

Gratitude can help you shift your focus and perspective by teaching you to look for the positive things in your life. When you practice gratitude, you change your perspective from the things missing in your life to the good things that you have. When you begin to shift your focus from the bad to the good, you are priming yourself to seek more and more good in your life. You may then feel that good things are more frequently coming into your life as you build a more positive mindset.

You may be struggling to get started in practicing gratitude, especially if you have been struggling with depression, anxiety, or trauma in your life. Keep things simple. Here is a list of examples to get you started:

  • A comfortable place to sleep
  • Enough food to eat
  • Access to clean water
  • Having clean clothing
  • Having friends and support
  • Having a job
  • Your unique talents
  • Having family members who care for you
  • Your pet
  • Good health
  • Your favorite things, like music, books, and movies
  • A warm shower
  • A beautiful sunrise or sunset
  • Access to nature

You can practice gratitude daily by writing out the things that you are grateful for in a journal. We say that you “practice” gratitude because this will take some work and thought on your part. The work is part of the process and, as you continue, you will notice more of the good things in your life.

Practicing gratitude can help you learn to appreciate the good and simple things in your life. You can begin to notice that there are more things to be thankful for than there are to be upset about. Our minds tend to look for the negative as part of our survival instinct. We tend to take the good things for granted while we look for things that might be posing a threat to our well-being. By practicing gratitude, you can start to notice more of the good things in your life that may have been passing you by. You can start to change your mindset to a more positive one by working on your gratitude daily in a journal. You may need to start with the basics and remember that the basics are just as important to your happiness.
